Where the boat is
The Maid of the Mist boards at Prospect Point, Niagara Falls State Park, New York — the ticket booths are beside the Observation Tower, the elevator takes you down to the landing. US side only.
On the Canadian side, the boat leaving from the base of Clifton Hill is Niagara City Cruises (the Hornblower operation, rebranded), a different company with a different ticket — roughly CA$36 to CA$48 for an adult depending on how you book, plus tax, on larger catamarans with seating and restrooms. Same falls, same spray, similar 20 minutes; not the same boat, and not interchangeable tickets.
Why people think it used to be Canadian
Because it was: Maid of the Mist ran from both shores for decades until the Canadian concession changed hands and Hornblower took over the Ontario side in 2014. The name stayed on the US boats and in everyone’s memory of the Canadian ride. Today “Maid of the Mist” means the New York boat, full stop.
Passports and the bridge
- Riding the Maid of the Mist as a visitor already on the US side: no passport needed — it is a boat in a state park.
- Staying in Ontario and riding it: you cross the Rainbow Bridge on foot or by car, which is an international border — passport (or an accepted equivalent) both ways, and re-entry lines that vary by day.
- Several tours do the crossing for you — with a passport still required — and pick up on both sides.
Which side is better?
For the view, Canada — you face the American and Horseshoe Falls head-on. For being in the falls, the US side: Goat Island, the Cave of the Winds and Terrapin Point put you closer than anything on the Ontario shore. Most first-timers do both; a one-day both-sides tour is the least stressful way.
