Which is better?
Do the boat if you can only do one. It is the one thing nothing else at Niagara replicates — 20 minutes inside the roar with the Horseshoe wrapped around you. Journey Behind the Falls is the better complement: calmer, self-paced, open every day of the year, and the only vantage point that shows you the water from behind. Where Journey Behind the Falls disappoints is expectations: the two portals show a white wall of water and mist, not a view — the views are from the decks, and the lower deck is the photograph everyone has seen. Doing both in one day
It works, and it is a genuinely good day:
- Morning, US side. Be at Prospect Point for one of the first sailings after opening — the line is shortest and the light on the Horseshoe is best. Boat, then the Observation Tower; if you hold a pass, the Cave of the Winds slot follows.
- Cross at midday. The Rainbow Bridge is a walk of a few minutes; allow more for the Canadian border check (passport, or NEXUS/enhanced licence for eligible travellers). Table Rock Centre is about 20 minutes on foot along the Parkway to the south, or a WEGO ride.
- Afternoon, Canadian side. Journey Behind the Falls, then Skylon Tower or the Parkway viewpoints. Buy the Journey ticket online with a timed window if it is July or August; otherwise walk-up is fine outside the 11am–4pm crush.
- Evening. Stay on the Ontario side for the illumination — the falls are lit nightly and Journey at Night runs the same tunnels after dark.
