Maid of the Mist tickets are not timed, so the wait is the boarding line: minutes on a May weekday, an hour-plus on July–August afternoons. What decides it, the best hours, and why buying online doesn't shorten it.

Because Maid of the Mist tickets are not timed and not reserved, “the wait” is one thing only: the boarding line at the top of the elevator at Prospect Point. It ranges from a few minutes to well over an hour, and almost all of that variation is the hour of the day and the month. Here is what decides it and how to be on the short end.

The one reliable trick is to be early — and a morning pass is built around exactly that.

What the line looks like

  • May, June, September, October weekdays: minutes. Walk up, buy at the booth or scan your voucher, elevator, poncho, boat.
  • Summer weekends and July–August middays: the boarding line becomes the longest wait in the park — an hour or more is normal at 1–3pm on a Saturday.
  • Evenings in late June to early August (8pm close): the line collapses after dinner; riding at 6:30pm is one of the best-kept local tricks. See hours.

Boats leave roughly every 15 minutes and carry a lot of people, so the line moves — it just refills faster than it drains at peak.

What does not help

  • Buying online. It saves the ticket-window line, not the boarding line, and it does not give you a time. Buy online for convenience, not for speed.
  • Tour bundles. No pass on the platform can jump the boat line — the featured pass says the boat is included, not that it is expedited. What passes do handle is the Cave of the Winds timed slot, which is the part that actually needs a reservation.
  • “Skip-the-line” language. Read what it refers to: on the premium van tour it is the Cave of the Winds ticket line, and the early-access tour is early access to the Cave — not the boat.

What does help

  1. First boats after 9am. The single biggest lever.
  2. A weekday. Any weekday beats any weekend.
  3. The evening boats in the 8pm-close weeks.
  4. Shoulder season — May and September have full daylight and thin lines.

Does it sell out?

Not in the timed sense — there is no inventory to sell out; the line simply grows. Tour bundles can sell out on peak days because they have fixed group sizes, so if you want the small-group version on a July Saturday, book it early in the week.
