Maid of the Mist With Kids
Children 5 and under ride the Maid of the Mist free, 6–12 pay $19.75; there is no minimum age, ponchos come in child sizes, and there are no restrooms on board. How to do it with children — and which passes work for families.
Children love the Maid of the Mist — it is loud, wet, twenty minutes long and ends with a poncho to keep. Here is what you need to know about ages, prices, gear and the line, and which passes make the family morning easiest.
The family-friendliest pass is the small-group boat + cave tour with a local guide — 4.9 from 564 guests, from $115.
Ages and prices
- No minimum age. Babies ride.
- 5 and under: free with a paying adult. 6–12: $19.75. Adults $30.25.
- Ponchos are handed out before boarding, in child sizes too — the poncho is the souvenir.
- The ticket includes the elevator down to the landing; the ride is 20 minutes; there is a lot of spray and it is cold even in July.
The practical bits
- No restrooms on the boat. Use the ones in the state park by the Observation Tower before you go down.
- Strollers: the elevator and landing are stroller-friendly; the boat is a standing crowd — a carrier is easier for small children.
- Getting wet: you will. Dry clothes or at least dry socks in the bag; phones in a zip bag.
- The line: children and an hour-long line do not mix. Take one of the first boats after 9am or an evening boat in the 8pm-close weeks — see wait times.
- Cave of the Winds: the Hurricane Deck is a huge hit with kids who like getting drenched; it is a timed ticket ($19 youth in season), and the winter route closes the deck.
Which side of Niagara Falls is better for kids?
The US side for doing things — the boat, the cave, Goat Island’s paths, the Observation Tower — all inside one walkable state park. The Canadian side for the view and Clifton Hill’s arcades. With young children, one side per day is plenty; the both-sides tours are long days.
